If you’ve ever felt like you’re making great progress during the week only to have the weekend undo all of your hard work, you’re definitely not alone.
In fact, that’s exactly what I’ve been noticing lately.
The good news is that despite a very full schedule, I’m officially down 10.4 pounds since making some simple lifestyle changes!
The challenge has been learning how to stay consistent when life gets chaotic.
As a Certified Health & Life Coach, I know all the strategies. But trust me, knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. I’m human too!
The Weekend Challenge
During the week, my schedule is fairly predictable.
I know when I’m working, when I’m exercising, and when I’ll have time to eat.
Weekends look completely different.
Our daughters play on a competitive basketball team, which means tournaments, road trips, early mornings, long days in gyms, and plenty of time spent on the road.
On top of that, my husband and I live on an acreage, which always comes with a long list of projects and responsibilities.
And recently, we joined a garden co-op.
The garden co-op has been fantastic. We love the idea of growing food and being part of a community project.
That said, with everything else already happening in our lives, we may have bitten off a little more than we can chew! 😅
Let me know if you can relate to this! 😜
Sometimes it feels like we’re trying to fit ten pounds of life into a five-pound bag.
Why Weekends Can Derail Your Progress
What I’ve noticed is that when my schedule gets hectic, I don’t suddenly forget how to be healthy.
The problem is that I stop planning, and then I get hungry. Like, really hungry.
And that’s usually when convenience foods start looking like a great idea. 🫣
It’s easy to make healthy choices when nutritious food is sitting in your fridge and you’re at home, or if you’re at work with a packed lunch.
It’s much harder when you’re rushing between commitments and haven’t eaten in hours.
For me, the biggest factors in staying on track have been:
- Planning ahead
- Not letting myself get overly hungry
- Having convenient healthy options available
- Finding ways to stay active even when my routine changes
Simple, but incredibly effective.
Healthy Eating Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
One of the biggest myths I see is that healthy eating has to involve hours of meal prep every Sunday.
While meal prep works for some people, it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
Sometimes simple is better.
Here are a few strategies that help me stay on track when life gets busy.
Keep Portable Snacks Available
One of my favorites is pre-packaged nuts.
They’re easy to throw in a purse, gym bag, or vehicle, and they help prevent the “I’m starving and will eat anything” situation.
You can find plenty of options at grocery stores and even dollar stores.
Take Advantage of Convenience Foods
Not all convenience foods are unhealthy. Many grocery stores sell pre-cut fruits and vegetables.
Sure, they cost a little more than preparing them yourself, but sometimes paying for convenience helps you stay consistent.
And consistency matters.
Choose Protein When You’re On the Go
When I’m running between basketball games, I sometimes grab a protein shake from somewhere like Booster Juice.
It keeps me satisfied, supports my health goals, and helps me avoid mindless snacking later in the day.
Movement Still Counts—Even If It’s Not a Workout
Another thing that’s been helping me is walking. LOTS of walking.
During basketball tournaments, I often head outside between games and go for a brisk walk.
Sometimes it’s 30 minutes, and sometimes it’s over an hour. Sometimes I’ll fit in multiple walks throughout the day.
And while a perfectly structured workout would be ideal, life isn’t always going to work around that thought.
I’ve learned that doing something is far better than doing nothing.
Those walks help me clear my head, manage stress, increase my daily movement, and stay connected to my goals.
The Secret Isn’t Perfection
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that success rarely comes from doing something extraordinary.
Success usually comes from continuing to do the basics when life gets busy.
Not perfectly, just consistently.
The women I work with often think they need a complete life overhaul to see results, but the truth is that small choices, repeated over time, create massive change.
Think: one healthy snack, one walk, one better decision. One day at a time. Those choices add up.
Whether your goal is weight loss, more energy, reducing burnout, improving your mindset, or simply feeling better in your own skin, consistency will always beat perfection.
Final Thoughts
Life is busy. Sometimes really busy. There will always be basketball tournaments, work projects, family commitments, unexpected events, and seasons where things feel a little chaotic.
The goal isn’t to wait for life to calm down, the goal is to learn how to take care of yourself while life is happening. And that’s what I’m working on right now.
And so far, those simple changes have helped me lose 10.4 pounds, feel more in control of my choices, and create momentum that feels sustainable.
Not perfect, – just better.
And sometimes, better is exactly what we need.
I’d love to hear from you.
