How One Keystone Habit Changed My Health Without Overhauling My Life
If you’ve ever felt like you need to completely reinvent your life in order to get healthier, you’re not alone.
For years, I thought that meaningful change required a complicated plan, perfect consistency, and a whole lot more time than I actually had.
But recently, I was reminded of something I teach my coaching clients all the time:
Small changes can create big results.
Since April 27th, I’ve lost almost 10 pounds.
While I’m happy about the weight loss, that’s not actually the most important part of the story.
The most important part is how it happened.
What Is a Keystone Habit?
A keystone habit is a habit that creates a ripple effect in other areas of your life.
Instead of trying to change everything at once, you focus on one habit that naturally makes other healthy choices easier.
Think of it like the first domino.
When it falls, other dominoes start falling too.
The Keystone Habit I Chose
For me, that habit was simply moving my body more.
I started running again.
I added a few HIIT workouts because they’re incredibly effective and don’t require hours of exercise! (Who doesn’t love that?!)
That was it.
I didn’t start following a complicated diet.
I definitely didn’t cut out entire food groups.
I didn’t spend hours in the gym (not enough time for that!)
I simply made movement a priority again.
The Ripple Effect
Something interesting started happening.
The more consistently I exercised, the more naturally I wanted to make healthier choices.
After a run, I found myself reaching for foods that supported my goals rather than foods that left me feeling sluggish.
I wasn’t forcing myself to be perfect.
I just didn’t want to undo the effort I had put into my workout.
I also became more mindful about evening snacking.
One simple guideline I started following was to stop eating after 7pm whenever possible.
Now let’s be realistic.
With a full-time job, daughters in sports, coaching, family responsibilities, and everything else life throws my way, that isn’t always possible.
But becoming more intentional about evening eating made a noticeable difference!
And then there was the ice cream. Let’s just say ice cream had become a little more than an occasional treat.
These days it’s back to being an actual treat rather than a regular habit.
The Truth About Finding Time
One of the biggest excuses I hear from women is:
“I just don’t have time.”
The interesting thing is that I didn’t find more time.
I simply re-prioritized the time I already had.
The time was there, I was just using it differently.
That shift in perspective changed everything.
Why This Matters
Many women try to change ten things at once.
They decide to:
- Exercise every day
- Meal prep every Sunday
- Drink more water
- Meditate
- Journal
- Wake up earlier
- Cut out sugar
No wonder it feels overwhelming.
Instead, consider choosing one keystone habit.
One habit that has the potential to positively influence multiple areas of your life.
For me, it was movement.
For someone else, it might be:
- Going to bed earlier
- Drinking more water
- Walking daily
- Meal planning
- Journaling
The goal is not perfection.
The goal is momentum.
Start Small
Earlier this year, my family and I went on a two-week vacation. Let’s just say some of those vacation eating habits stuck around WAY longer than the vacation itself!
But instead of trying to fix everything at once, I focused on one habit.
That single habit created a ripple effect that helped me feel better, make healthier choices, and move closer to my goals.
Sometimes the simplest things are the most powerful.
So here’s my question for you:
What keystone habit could create a positive ripple effect in your life?
Just start there.
You might be surprised by what happens next.
