"Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change."
Jim Rohn
Welcome to 2024!
How are you feeling now that you have a brand new, fresh, blank slate for which to write your story for the new year?
I have to be honest. When I woke up on January 1st, I wasn’t thrilled with my progress over the last month of 2023. And, I was feeling disappointed about how my “fresh, blank slate” was looking on that first morning of 2024.
Our family had the flu/covid/whatever-it-was go through our house starting in September, and mine kept coming back over and over again (five times, I believe). So by the time December got here, I was tired. Up until that point, I was able to (mostly) keep my routine up, and then it fizzled quickly other than a few odd runs or strength training sessions here & there. And then it came back yet again, so badly that I didn’t move off the couch for an entire day. (For anyone that knows me, that seems like an impossibility because I don’t like to sit still).
So then I would start sleeping in longer on weekends. I wouldn’t spend as much time outside – my favorite place to be. I was spending more time on social media. My food choices were not ideal, and I would find myself snacking at night… and not anything healthy, either. 😉
So when I woke up on January 1st, I was feeling bloated, tired, and frankly – disgusted with myself. What kind of a coach was I? My clients are thriving, and here I am… Not practicing my precious way of living and maybe even feeling a little envious that they were.
If you’re feeling the same way, I have some great news for you!
Here is where you get to decide what you don’t want, what no longer serves you, and make some changes!
It’s time to let go of the old, and let the new in.
And I’m going to show you how!
So grab a pen and journal, or a notebook, and let’s get to work. I’m going to give you 5 effective steps to make this your best year yet! The best part is that you can use these over and over when you need to that re-boot your energy and motivation!
Here we go:
Here are 5 powerful tips to reset your energy so you can fuel your best year yet:
1. Write down everything that is going well in your life
Here are some examples, and you come up with your own: perhaps you lost some extra pounds last year. Maybe you didn’t gain anything over the holidays. You have a partner that supports you. Or, you don’t have to answer to anyone. Your kids are healthy and thriving. You have everything you need to make meaningful changes. You had a career advancement. You are changing careers. Etc. Whatever is is for you, make a list.
2. Write down your goals for the next 90 Days
We don’t want to go too far into the future. We also want to make sure they are small enough that they can be achieved within this time frame and large enough that you will be moving out of your comfort zone. It’s best to choose one or two goals to focus on. Use the SMART method: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. I find it easier to start at 90 Days out and then move backwards to 60 days, and then 30 days.
3. Decide what your Motivating Factor is
(Think of this as your MoFa for short!). Is it that you have kids, and you want to set a good example for them? Do you have some health issues, and you know you need to make changes? Do you want to prevent health issues like Type 2 Diabetes or fatty liver disease? Do you want to practice mindfulness and gratitude and be more present so you’re not missing out on life? Are you feeling stuck and want to feel alive? What is it for you?
4. Action Steps
This is where you devise your plan to achieve the one or two goals you have decided on. Your best plan is to come up with weekly actions and then track them to make sure you’re on track. Use a dedicated journal or notebook, and keep track of how you’re feeling about them and if there are any adjustments that you need to make. Perhaps you wanted to work out three mornings per week, and you need to adjust your timing because you’re too tired. Maybe you started a new eating plan, and you have discovered it’s not sustainable. This is the great thing about looking at your action steps weekly because it’s super easy to adjust them so they work better for you. Just make sure you are being honest with yourself and evaluate if they are truly not working or if you are just wanting to go back to your “old ways”/comfort zone.
5. Set up ACCOUNTABILITY!!
This is the key that is going to keep you on track, and without it, the majority of people will not achieve their goals. Here are some ways you can do this:
- Track your Progress. Use a journal, notebook or calendar where you can see the progress you have made, and this will keep you going.
- Set up a reward system. Celebrate the wins along the way. This could be a new pair of shoes, a new workout outfit from your favorite store, or a night out with friends or family (think bowling, escape room, dancing, etc. You will want to stay on track with your goals, so if your goal is weight loss, you wouldn’t want to head out for a dinner that will throw your progress out. Make these rewards empowering celebrations of your progress).
- Get an accountability partner. This could be a friend or family member, a colleague at work, or perhaps someone you know at your gym or church. Make sure they are fully aware of your goals and set up a system that works for both of you so you’re checking in at specified times of the week.
- Hire a coach. This is probably the single most effective way to stay on track. When you hire a certified health or life coach, it’s not only their purpose to help you win in life - it’s good for their business as well to have success stories to share! They are trained to have you do all the above… and so much more.
