Recently, I heard a quote that really stuck with me.
It was something like:
“You’re not guaranteed to win if you try, but if you don’t try, you’re guaranteed to lose.”
I don’t remember exactly who said it (or even the exact wording lol), but the message hit home.
It also got me thinking about how many dreams, goals, and ideas sit on the sidelines simply because we keep waiting for the “right time.”
Maybe you’ve been wanting to improve your health. Maybe you’ve been thinking about applying for a new job. Maybe you’ve been meaning to set better boundaries.
Maybe it’s starting a business, writing a book, launching a podcast, creating a YouTube channel, or signing up for that class you’ve been curious about.
And yet, days turn into weeks, and then weeks turn into months, and months turn into years.
The truth is, time is going to pass anyway.
Thirty days from now.
Ninety days from now.
One year from now.
The calendar keeps moving whether we take action or not.
The Question That Changes Everything
Instead of asking:
“Am I ready?”
Try asking:
“What will my future self wish I had started today?”
That question shifts the focus away from perfectionism, overthinking, and waiting for all the stars to align.
Because when most of us look back, we rarely regret trying. We regret waiting. We regret talking ourselves out of opportunities.
We regret assuming we’ll have more time later.
And, we regret putting our lives on hold until conditions are “perfect”.
My Own Example
For me, one of those things is YouTube. I’ve been talking about creating videos for a long time.
The reality is that life is busy. Between work, family responsibilities, basketball tournaments, maintaining our acreage, our garden co-op, and everything else on the calendar, I genuinely feel short on time some days.
But I’ve also realized something important: Waiting for the perfect moment hasn’t gotten a single video posted.
At some point, progress requires action. Not a perfect plan, not perfect timing. Just action.
One small step forward. 👣
And whether my video gets 10 views or 10,000 views really isn’t the point.
The point is starting.
A Simple Accountability Framework
If you’re struggling to get started, try this simple framework:
1. Pick ONE Goal
Choose one thing that matters most right now.
2. Choose ONE Action
What’s the smallest meaningful step you can take this week?
3. Tell ONE Person
Share your commitment with someone who will encourage you and help keep you accountable.
4. Check In
At the end of the week, ask yourself:
“Did I do what I said I would do?”
No judgment, no beating yourself up.
Just honesty.
Then adjust and keep moving forward.
What If You Didn’t Have to Do It Alone?
One thing I’ve learned over the years—both personally and as a Certified Health & Life Coach—is that most people don’t struggle because they don’t know what to do.
They struggle because life gets busy.
Good intentions get buried under work, family responsibilities, appointments, endless to-do lists, and the unexpected curveballs that seem to show up out of nowhere.
